DeviantART Logo

Description

The deviantART logo that you've probably been seeing pop-up here and there. While we've not fully rolled out the mark, it's appearing on a lot of products, services, and other similar things. As such, I felt it was time to share it publicly with the community and explain the decisions that went into its development.

The Idea
When designing this mark, we knew we needed something balanced and more versatile than the old mark. The old mark was and is imbalanced, and is extremely difficult to use in a wide array of situations. That is why we conceived of this evolution of the original mark, in order to build a more useful and stylish form that was still true to the original.

The Reference
If you don't know where the square shape came from, take a look around you. Avatars, my man. Avatars. They're all 50x50 squares, and they're a cornerstone of the community. DeviantART really did help make the 50x50 size a web standard that is echoed in nearly every other social application around, and as such we wanted to pay tribute to that in a subtle way.

Color
For a very long time, our brand color has been a dark gray-green. It's how people recognize the site and we effectively own it. Obviously the logo's primary presentation has to utilize this color, but we decided to use a secondary color: the lime-ish green tone. We use this color in choice areas of the site when we want to grab your attention, and it works well with the primary brand color while making for a fresh and positive feeling.

Typography
The logotype portion is a custom variation upon a known font. Ends are rounded off to communicate a more fun atmosphere while the word "ART" is much bolder and sharper, but remains in-line with the x-height and baseline of the lowercase letterforms (for visual continuity).

Roll-out
Like I said, this mark will be rolled-out slowly. You won't suddenly see it everywhere. We're just going to keep building it into new things as we go, until we end up with every corner of the site (and off the site) properly branded.
