Stapler WIP by TheRyanFord Stapler WIP by TheRyanFord
Stapler is a little font I began putting together this past week. It is not finished; this is a Work In Progress.

While working on a logo concept, I drew out some custom letterforms. We didn't go with the logo concept, so I took the letterforms and am expanding them into a font.

As you can see, Stapler is based upon the digital figures found in alarm clocks & watches, as well as from staples. All of its letterforms are similar in size, form, and dimension, and are all geometric in shape. However, there is a slight curvature to every line except for mid-lines (which are all perfectly straight). There is also a bit of inspiration from the type used in Russian Konstruktivism...although Stapler is significantly lighter in weight.

Anyway, this is sort of a side project which I'm developing a bit. Plan on light, regular, bold, and black weights for this. But, don't plan on massively expanded character sets. It's just a little display font, after all.

Is there some way to download a trial version of it, like you can with Fonce Sans Pro? It looks very cool.

I don't think I'm going to sell Stapler. So when I put it up it'll probably just be free.

I like the rounding, it gives it a slightly more welcoming feel.

Has this been released yet? Or have you scrapped it?

This looks like yet another fun little font. The idea is simple enough and with your attention to detail it's sure to be polished. Can't wait to see the final version/s.

Nice font mate, how do you create fonts?

By the way, can I buy it and how much? ;)

I create them with a little program called FontLab. This is just a little display font, so it's significantly easier than a typeface.

It's not quite finished yet, but when it is I'll make sure to let people know via my journal.

Good work!

Looks good; I was looking for this sort of font. A nice light techno-ish font.

Can't wait for the release.

It's nice, but as others have said, Fonce Sans is a much better typeface. Perhaps I don't like it as much because it isn't a font which can be used for body text, but in general, this type of font doesn't appeal to me. Having said that, I do like the fact that you've incorporate subtle curves into each of the characters, along with an almost chiseled edge to all of the ends.

So you're planning on adding weights, since you're calling this a font?

I suspect you're confusing your terminologies. Only the term "typeface" implies a family.

Sometimes the client will want it as a typeface as well, lets pray it doesn't come to that :)

No, it's not being used for the client.

As I mentioned, it was originally developed as part of a logo project, but this particular concept was scrapped in favor of another concept I had. But I liked the look of the few letters I made so I continued to develop it into a font.

The mixture between capital and lower case letters seems rather odd, like in the word 'BaSeD'.

wow, i really like that. the subtle curves look really nice
the a and e are hot :P

the only thing that really sticks out to me is the line across the zero.. seems a bit out of place in this font. but i guess you need to distinguish from the O.. :ninja:

:icontheryanford:
TheRyanFord Featured By Owner Jun 19, 2006  Professional Interface Designer
Understandable, but I unfortunately have to differentiate the o and the 0 in some way. The s and 5 are very similar, too, but I put a little tail on the 5 to keep it different enough. It's a tough thing, the o and 0, because all of the letterforms are based upon the original shape of the o.
