Journal Entry: Sat Jan 14, 2017, 12:26 AM

Wasn't there a new site design for dA coming ~ 2.5 years ago? What happened?

These might be the twilight years of DA. :(

I think they should have a redesign contest again. I remember so many good contributions back in the day, and i honestly think it's been a while since devArt looked good.

Version 2 and 3 was definately my favourites!

It would probably resemble ArtStation too much by now. =p

I'm not sure. Perhaps it had to do with the removal of the deviantWear area? I mean, that's all I can really think of that's changed significantly.

Also, I find it interesting that only Senior members have commented on this journal so far.

How would it have anything to do with DevWear? That was cancelled because it wasn't profitable enough compared to what it cost to maintain.

That's not entirely accurate, but I don't imagine it has anything to do with clothing anyway.

I dunno, but it had to get a little bit of site redesign, like the top bar had to have it removed, the Shop area had to have it removed...

Can't say it rings a bell then. I got the impression they were working on revamping the site architecture to be more scalable and standards compliant (leading to things like OAuth developer tools), but it feels like that's been dragging on for years without any clear front-end impact.

Their tech stack is pretty dated. I would imagine they would want to rebuild that before making big updates to UI, and that sort of thing can take time. I'm just curious where this redesign is because, years ago, there was this big timeline they rolled out along with the rebrand and it indicated all these things were going to happen. And they never happened. At least not publicly.

After the more recent round of layoffs, several reviews appeared on Glassdoor mentioning projects constantly changing focus, I wonder if that's related?

Idk, I imagine you have far greater insight into DA than anyone else since you've been inside.

Projects did have a tendency to do that, and I imagine that is likely still the case.
I can understand projects change at times, but best practice is to announce a project when it's nearly complete and has a definitive launch date. I have to assume that the team felt the design was moving along smoothly, and so they felt comfortable in announcing it. It is strange that they made the announcement, and then pulled pages down that promised it, and then never mentioned it again. I guess I am overall just curious to see what they were making and what they felt would move the audience engagement needle and make the site feel "new" again.

I faintly recall dxd or another former staff mentioning there was a consulting team that came in and gave a third-party opinion on where the site should go (features, logo, re-branding, etc).  It sounded like it really inspired the team, but ultimately hasn't come to fruition.  I'm unclear if that's the same thing you're referring to.  I don't recall anything quite as pointed as promising a new site design... although there was something about "dA version 999" or something like that, I really don't remember.

~I guess I am overall just curious
 It pains me greatly, but I've learned to just bury that curiosity.  As a developer I've always wanted to get in on the latest and greatest news (if for no other reason than to be prepared to fix my code when a new feature is released) but it inevitably seems you have to be an active staff member to gain access to that info :hmm:.

Private companies tend to be a little averse to spilling the beans on upcoming features or changes to their roadmaps.
But, as we can all see, this site is a little behind the times. I have to assume they are working on something behind the scenes. Just wondering aloud where it is.

I'm guessing the financial problems had something to do with it
